What are Dental Implants?

Have you lost a tooth? If so, you understand the negative impacts tooth loss can have on your appearance and your confidence. In recent years, dental technology has advanced, allowing patients with missing teeth to benefit from a unique and long lasting form of tooth replacement. Dr. Adrian Vande Merwe offers state-of-the-art dental implants.

The Health Risks of Tooth Loss

Your body is immediately aware of a missing tooth. Once your body notices an absent tooth root, it responds by stopping the flow of calcium and phosphorus to that area of the jaw. Without these nutrients, the bone dissolves, leading to facial collapse. Patients can look significantly older, developing sunken cheeks and a ptotic chin. Losing a tooth also means throwing your smile out of alignment, as remaining teeth often shift towards empty sockets. Finally, lost teeth can cause malocclusion and place pressure on the jaw joints, which increase the risk of TMJ disorder and bruxism.

Replacing Your Lost Tooth

To help patients restore smiles to full function and health, Dr. Adrian may recommend dental implants. Unlike bridges or dentures, which are held in place with either crowns or natural suction, implants are inserted into the jawbone. The implant will then be topped with a restoration, typically a dental crown. For patients with multiple missing teeth, several implant posts can be placed to secure a fixed bridge or denture. To see if you qualify, we will need to examine your jaw to ensure you have an adequate amount of bone tissue to support the posts and that your gums are free of disease, which can lead to implant failure.

Caring for Your New Replacement Teeth

To care your implants, you simply need to maintain a good oral health, this includes:

  • Brushing your teeth, including your implant, twice a day
  • Flossing at least once a day
  • Having your teeth examined and thoroughly cleaned twice a year

Dr. Adrian will provide detailed care instructions and monitor your replacement tooth. With the proper care, your new implant can potentially last for 25 years and possibly even longer.
